![]() ![]() The benefits of increased EQ in the health sector are numerous and well-researched in the fields of Social Science. With selfless frontline healthcare workers baring the highest cost in terms of their own well-being.įorgive the "on the nose" analogy but the health sector is facing something akin to "Long Covid" where it is struggling to bounce back from the strain it sustained in 2020/2021. The resulting downstream impact of the pandemic has had a profound impact on our hospitals, around the world. The health sector in particular has had it hard over the last few years. ![]() In all 3 factors of Burnout measurement (Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and a Sense of Personal Accomplishment) those with higher levels of empathy fare better in the same context, with the same stressors. In 2019 the WHO categorised burnout as a workplace phenomenon, the result of the context of one’s work, not as a result of one’s own deficiency. That is not my intention or interpretation. It has come to my attention through some of the comments below that one might interpret what I have written here to mean that the people who are victims of burnout are somehow to blame for not having enough empathy. The two are not mutually exclusive categories. This is not to suggest that if you are suffering burnout that you lack empathy. LABORATORY MANAGEMENT SEASONAL SCHOOL 2023 #learnerships #apprenticeships #onthejobtraining #formation #professionaldevelopment #professional #culture #organisationalculture #humanity What kind of young human adults is your company culture working to form? So corporate culture is becoming, more and more, the place where people in their early twenties are forming their view of self at the same time as they learn what it means to be a professional. Well, as I said above, the context we are in helps to shape us. What does this mean for the formation of these young professionals in the formative years of their early twenties after high school? This means that (similar to the old apprenticeship model) professionals are leaning on the job more than we have seen in many decades. Many young people are entering the job market before their tertiary education and studying part-time along the way. Today we are seeing an upside-down trend in education. ![]() And, likewise, the university years became the formative years for many of us as young adults. Then we moved to a non-tactile way of preparing people for the job market: University. In the past, when people entered the working world in their teens (through apprenticeships) the formation of the self in that very influential teenage stage, went hand in hand with the formation of professional identity. The environments we are in during our formative years shape who we become. ![]()
